I was looking at different responses in terms of dilution with substances of different viscosities. Interested in the diffusion of particles and integration of particles from system A into B, but once it becomes fully integrated into the other system  (it becomes a new system), and is static again.  This lead into investigating the dilution of other substances which do not entirely diffuse, (substance of different viscosities).  They maintain a concentration within system B.  Further research into how the substance contains its form, and what other variables can allow it move again.

The particle movement of ink and water is dependent on

-the concentration of ink and the rate (diffusion coefficient) at which it diffuses / spreads to reach a uniform concentration.

-direction is random- equal probability of moving to the left or right at any moment in time.

-particles have constant velocity so each move at the same distance in a fixed amount of time.

Biological Sovereignty

The relation between sovereignty and biology, which is concerned with “life itself” underlies a shift from “defense” to “security”.  The problem arises as to, how to articulate what is threatening versus what is threatened. And to bound the problem between the biological life that is threatened (cell, a population) and the biological life that is the threat (virus, bacterium), as they are both “life itself”.

Looking through the lens of Agamben’s “State of Exception”, it discusses how the sovereign power can exists at once inside and outside the law and can decide when it no longer applies – it decides on exception.  This “no man’s land” becomes the production of “threat” and “security”(9). The law is both suspended and in force and the “sovereign is defined by the ability to decide as to when specific events become the “state of exception” (or state of emergency).

“Bare life”, also referred to as homo sacer, is the “life that can be killed but not sacrificed”(9).  This creates a dual existence – a threat to life (that which is threatened), as life is outside the law (the population which creates law, or which is constructed around), but life is also internal to law (as laws protect the foundation of social and political life).

Agamben’s questions raise the notion of bare life -

is bare life “one”?

Is bare life “indistinct”? so bare life itself is indistinct?

Is bare life indeterminate”?

Thacker then discusses Foucault’s structure of the sovereign power as “security, territory population”. Multiplicities become a problem – as they “threaten the singularity formed by the sovereign injunction”.            But Thacker further suggests that specifications of bare life as “specific life”, in context of biodefence, can be looked at through 3 lenses; sovereignty always exists in relation to a threat – life is a threat itself – and is threatened.

So how does this apply to today’s society in our social networks – the living networks?  How are issues of emergence to be understood in this context, and could this suggest a swarming behavior?
